Seats of Power — Duchy of Greenfields

Willowhall, the Gentle Council, and the rituals that keep peaceful governance rooted in harvest and hearth.

Willowhall

Willowhall is the living heart of Greenfields’ governance—a sprawling longhouse built into the slope of a grassy hill. Its roof is a living garden of herbs, flowers, and trailing vines. The building is warm, fragrant, and unmistakably alive, reflecting the Duchy’s belief that leadership should nurture, not dominate.

Purpose

  • Seat of the Gentle Council.
  • Administrative center for land, trade, and civic records.
  • Diplomatic hall for visiting envoys and traveling mediators.

Notable Features

  • Living Roof-Garden — maintained by Duchess Willow Hornfoot, filled with medicinal and culinary herbs.
  • Seed Archive — shelves of heirloom seeds dating back centuries.
  • Central Hearth — a magically sustained fire that never extinguishes, a symbol of continuity.
  • Sky-Circle Chamber — a round meeting room lit entirely by overhead skylights.

Adjacent Structures

  • Records Cottage — houses tithe ledgers, census books, and trade agreements.
  • Herbarium Wing — used by healers and herbalists for preparation and study.
  • Wardens’ Stable — mounts and message-birds for Duchy Wardens.
  • Guest House — a warm, small lodging for foreign diplomats or honored guests.

The Gentle Council

The Gentle Council governs by trust, tradition, and consensus. Members are chosen through reputation rather than ambition— elders whose wisdom has shaped farms, healed families, or kept peace across generations.

Leadership Titles

  • Duchess / Duke — ceremonial head of state and final tie-breaker in council decisions.
  • Steepwarden — oversees agriculture and land stewardship.
  • Riverkeeper — manages waterways, bridges, mills, and floods.
  • Hearthspeaker — mediator for inter-village disputes and community affairs.
  • Ledger Steward — responsible for trade agreements, taxes, and financial records.

Decision Process

  • Matters are discussed until consensus becomes clear.
  • When consensus cannot be reached, a formal vote is held.
  • If the vote is tied, the Duchess casts the deciding voice.
  • All decisions must be announced publicly in Meadowbrook’s circle square.

Safeguards & Traditions

  • Council Oath — a binding vow to place community before lineage or ambition.
  • Seedstone — a smooth river stone that glows faintly when lies are spoken nearby.
  • Open Hearth Seat — an always-empty chair representing the common people.
  • First Harvest Tribunal — annual review of council decisions by public forum.

Administrative Outposts

Greenfields maintains several small but essential civic buildings scattered through Meadowbrook and along its trade routes. Each reflects the Duchy’s preference for humble structures with reliable purpose rather than grand displays of power.

Key Outposts

  • Grain & Tithe Ledger Hall — maintains crop records, tithing agreements, and export tallies.
  • River Gatehouse — supervises ferries, water levels, and flood warnings.
  • Road Wardens’ Post — a rest hub for mounted patrols guarding outer farmlands.
  • Boundary Court — resolves land disputes, often over tea rather than conflict.
